Assignment 1: Complete your summer reading assignment and turn it in via Google Classroom on the first day of class. Assignment 2: In groups of 4 or 5, create two representations of Papa Eugene on butcher paper. The representations should be of the two sides of his character and relevant quotes and symbols to augment your representations. You will have three in-class days to create your representations. The groups will present their drawings on Day 4. Assignment 3: This will be a BYOD exercise. Form groups of 3 or 4 in which at least one person has a smart phone with unlimited data through your own service provider (We cannot use school Internet). Go to the following YouTube sites and listen and watch the pronunciation videos. Then, write all of the characters names as printed in the text and then, write the phonetic spelling next to each name. After this, choose 10 other Igbo words from the text and do the same as you did with the names. Then write 750 words about how Adichie's used Nigerian culture and politics to further the themes and characterizations in her novel. You must use evidence from both your research and the book which also means you must have a works cited page and use proper MLA style for your parenthetical citations. TED Talk Our lives, our cultures, are composed of many overlapping stories. Novelist Chimamanda Adichie tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice — and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding. Assignment 5: After watching the video "The Danger of a Single Story," Once you watch the video, curate three other resources on a Google slide that you believe show the “danger of a single story.” They can be websites, videos, articles etc, but you MUST write a summary in your own words explaining why each of your selections are valid. Here is an example Assignment 6: The Transformation of JaJa and Kambili The attached character sketch chart is for you to use to document the transformation of theses two characters. You will use three charts for each character. Make sure you explore all avenues of their transformation but put strong focus on who was most instrumental in each character's transformation and how the transformation comes about. Your charts are due on 25 September at the beginning of class. You will now use your charts to write and 1000-2000 word essay concerning the transformation of Jaja and Kambili. Please make sure you use textual evidence and that you not only how the two characters transformed, but how Adichie used effective characterization to show us this transformation.
